    Description

Peabody Essex Museum Replica NETSUKE CRAB, Hand Carved Resin, w/Wood Stand
This delightful little Netsuke replica was purchased over 40 years ago in the late 1970’s and is now retired. It comes from the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts and is made of hand carved resin. The figure is a small crab, hiding within an empty shell and resting upon a clam shell. The Netsuke is approximately 1 1/2" wide, 1 1/2” deep and 1/2" tall. It rests upon its own wooden stand and is signed with the letters “PEMET”.
The traditional Japanese kimonos did not have pockets, and Netsuke were devised as a means to secure pouches to carry personal items. While created as a practical devise to fill a need for over 300 years, Netsukes evolved into a unique form of miniature sculptures.
