    Description

Peabody Museum Replica NETSUKE TURTLE ON POND LEAF Hand Carved Resin, Wood Stand
This very charming Netsuke replica was purchased 40 years ago, in the late 1970’s, and is now retired. It comes from the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts and is made of hand carved resin. The figure is a small turtle atop a pond leaf giving the impression of a turtle floating upon a pond. The Netsuke is approximately 2 1/4" long, 1 1/2” wide and 5/8" tall and rests upon its own wooden stand.
The traditional Japanese kimonos did not have pockets, and Netsuke were devised as a means to secure pouches to carry personal items. While created as a practical devise to fill a need for over 300 years, Netsukes evolved into a unique form of miniature sculptures.
